The photo reference for this painting was taken by Gerard McGovern, a farm vet from Ireland.To me it sums up a years worth work. Picking which ewes to breed with which tup, getting them fit ,doseing, vaccinating, worming, foot trimming,scanning, giving just the right amount of feed,building lambins pens, bedding down, feeding round,then the actual lambing.The work is endless, costly and not always with a happy ending.Here the ewe ended up with the lamb 'out the side door'. Even after all that effort to ensure a live lamb and mother, she might just decide that mothering is not for her and the lamb needs to be adopted onto another ewe. Sheep farming is tough , hillsheep farming can be brutal.
